Social Media for Business: Real Time Results

March 31, 2010 By Randy Schrum View Comments

When you are a small business, the idea of using social media can be scary. It is certainly not the traditional means of marketing and it places so much more of the communication into the customers hands.  Another way we like to put at MyCorporateMedia is that it puts the power back in the hands of the people and has democratized marketing. However, don’t worry because when the many available services of social media are used wisely, all the risks fade away as you realize just how great the benefits become.

One of the more noticeable benefits would be an increase in the loyalty your customers have for your business. A product of this type of loyalty would be noticed when you see that the exposure your business receives is coming from those same loyal customers who are raving about you and convincing others to check you out as well.  This only comes however if you monitoring your message and the conversations that are taking place about you online.  Additionally, it lends to have some sort of brand advocate on staff working on your behalf in the social space.

Some of the best and most common advice when it comes to the use of social media for small businesses is this: Its not about using social media to sell your services, it is about using it to converse with your customers and keep them engaged while doing so. Oh, and one more thing. Social media is also much cheaper than traditional advertising as well. Use it wisely and watch your business rise above the small category into something bigger and better. This great wealth of service is not to be shunned but embraced by all, especially in a world that is online now more than ever before. This isn’t something that will decline and will continue to be a crucial avenue for all businesses, large or small, in the future.

Social Media Statistics Point to Obsession

March 21, 2010 By Randy Schrum View Comments

It doesn’t matter what time of the day it is, people are always curious and taking a look at their favorite social media sites. An independent study was recently conducted and 1,000 online users were surveyed. Some of the interesting statistics of this study are as follows.

- 12% of respondents check/use Facebook every couple of hours
- 62% of individuals over the age of 25 see electronic communications during a meeting, meal, or bathroom act as unwanted interruptions
- 23% of iPhone owners primarily get their morning news from Twitter and Facebook

Apparently, the use of Facebook and Twitter doesn’t stop after we go to bed either, with nearly half of those surveyed saying that they get up in the middle of the night just to check out what is going on. This particular behavior leans heavily toward those of us who are 25 or younger. It is increasingly obvious that social media is definitely something that many people even obsess over, and that is also very good for business and those professionals who are engaged in social media sites and really know what it means to utilize such services to grow their field.

Of course we cannot look at all of this and think that this would represent the entire population, but it certainly does give us a great feel for where people are trending.  As business professionals these simple statistics should cause us to step back and think about how we go about tapping into Social Media for our business.
